Richard Saltoun Gallery’s stand at Artissima features seven artists, both emerging and established, who embrace the art of embroidery. The presentation is inspired by Rozsika Parker’s influential essay from 1984, ‘The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and the Making of the Feminine’, which re-evaluates the reciprocal relationship between women and embroidery, freeing stitch-work from its traditional domestic setting and placing it in the world of fine art.

The gallery will present works by Olga DE AMARAL, Mariella BETTINESCHI, Thomas DE FALCO, Silvia GIAMBRONE, Greta SCHÖDL, Annegret SOLTAU, and Shelagh WAKELY

Richard Saltoun Gallery will present a solo curated stand in the Spotlight Section featuring Annegret SOLTAU’s work
Annegret Soltau is one of the leading Feminist artists working in Germany today. Arising out of early experimental performances in the 1970s, Soltau has become known for her use of black thread in photographic works to confront issues of the female body and emancipation. A series of photographs and collages, including her large-scale triptych Körper-Eingriffe (schwanger) [Body intervention (pregnant)] (1977-78), will be on display at Frieze Masters.

In addition she takes part at the charity exhibition with female artists of the Deutsche Bank Collection ‘Another World’ curated by Tracey Emin and her studio.

Annegret Soltau spent her childhood in a farmhouse, since burnt down, in the Elbe Marshes. Born as the second world war came to a close, she lived in poverty with her grandmother. She received no care and love from her mother, who was ashamed of having given birth to a child out of wedlock. The village school teacher was the only person to realise how intelligent and artistically talented Annegret was. He did all he could to ensure that she could go on to secondary school in the face of opposition from her family. Although Annegret Soltau was shy, lonely and living in a social environment that did not understand her, she succeeded in finishing school, followed by a year in England. Then she had the choice of three art academies.
Baldur Greiner, a sculptor, tells his wife’s life story with all the obstacles and difficulties as well as crucial, even horrible, experiences she had to overcome, which would also shape her art. Readers will understand how Annegret Soltau has controlled, harnessed and sewn her emotions into her work. The threads and lines become traces of a life that do not veil the selbst but rather expose it as a totality.

With an exhibition of works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection, Stavanger Art Museum is presenting one of the most important phenomena in the art history of the 1970s—the emancipation of women artists, who began to create their own new and collective self-determined image of women in an art world dominated by men. In line with the slogan “the private is political,” these artists reflected on stereotypical social expectations in their works.
The exhibition is divided into five sections: breaking out of one-dimensional role ascriptions as mother, housewife and wife, role-plays, locked up – breaking out, the beautiful body, and female sexuality. Many of the artists represented here moved away from the male-dominated genre of painting and turned to historically less predetermined media like photography, video, film, and performance. The collection director Gabriele Schor coined the concept of FEMINIST AVANTGARDE for this movement—as a way of underscoring its significance.
