The Body as Language – Women and Performance in the 70s
Richard Saltoun Gallery London at THE ARMORY SHOW
Pier 92, Booth 128, Insights
New York City
2 – 5 March 2017
Richard Saltoun Gallery presents at the Armory a curated stand featuring works by international female artists working in the 1970s.
The selected artists were all pioneers in the use of their body as a reference point for expressing political, social and aesthetic issues; pushing the boundaries of artistic expression through their individual use of media.
The stand, curated by Italian critic Paola Ugolini, will showcase a unique selection of works by artists active in both the American and European continent:
From the performances of Marina Abramovic, Eleanor Antin and Gina Pane; the staged photography of Valie Export, Renate Bertlmann, Ana Mendieta, Jo Spence and Francesca Woodman; to the use of unusual techniques and materials in Helena Almeida, Annegret Soltau and Hannah Wilke; and to the revolution of modern dance through the choreography of Trisha Brown and Yvonne Rainer, these artists have redefined the aesthetics of art. Their unique and radical aesthetic perspectives have influenced generations of artists and continue to resonate within contemporary ‘performative’ aesthetics.
