The materials I used in this work were documents involved in my long and fruitless search for my missing father. The work consists of 69 self-portraits and a film, “Gespräch mit Mutter” (“Conversation with my Mother”). I sewed the original letters into the photo of my face – letters from agencies such as the Red Cross and the agency responsible for notifying the relatives of the Wehrmacht soldiers killed in the war. In this way, the unredeemed story of the time after World War II becomes a part of my self-portrait; these formally phrased letters, sent in answer to my queries, remain to me a place of emptiness, a white space.
